SCHEDULE

Day 1 - Foraging and Pigment Making in the Wild

We’ll begin with a light hike through the breathtaking Los Angeles Mountains, where you’ll learn to connect with the landscape in a new way. Júlia will guide you in responsibly foraging for colorful minerals along the trail, stones and earth that hold the potential to become vibrant paint. On site, you’ll grind and refine these natural materials by hand, uncovering the ancient, tactile art of pigment making.

Day 2 - Paint Making and Creative Exploration

We’ll transform our handmade pigments into watercolor paint with a meditative mulling process and Júlia’s natural, homemade watercolor binder. You’ll learn how to pour, store, and care for your paints, crafted entirely from earth and intention. We’ll close the day with a guided session on watercolor painting techniques and color theory to help you begin your own creative journey, grounded in the land.

MATERIALS

To support your experience in class, a stone mortar and pestle, homemade watercolor medium, paint palette, and paint wells will be provided for you to use during class. All other materials must be brought with you.

If you don’t already have the necessary tools, Júlia recommends a Paint Mixing Tools Kit from Natural Earth Paint, linked below. Natural Earth Paint is a woman owned small business based in the U.S. By purchasing through this link, you’ll be supporting an important cause, and you’ll also be supporting Júlia, as she receives a small commission from sales.

Recommended Paint Mixing Tools Kit Includes:

  • Glass Palette

  • Glass Muller

  • Palette Knife

What To Bring:

  • Paint making tools (see above or order via kit link)

  • Watercolor sketchbook, brush, and pencil

  • Small jars for pigment storage

  • Fine mesh sieve

  • A couple of plastic containers (I love reusing old yogurt cups, anything around that size works great!)

  • Coffee filters

  • Water bottle

  • Comfortable clothes and hiking shoes

  • Sunscreen

  • A light snack

  • A few reusable bags or grocery bags

This is just an overview of the materials you’ll need, but don’t worry, Júlia has spent years figuring out what works best (and what doesn’t).

After registration, an email will be sent to you with more specific information like links to recommended supplies, and all of Júlia’s go to favorites to help you feel prepared and excited for class.

Due to how much time and specialized preparation goes into each class, cancellations are not accepted at this time.
