BROTO
Created in early 2025, Júlia’s BROTO COLLECTION took on a profound new meaning as the fires swept through Los Angeles. Each painting is made with pigments sourced from stones collected before the fires in the very landscapes that were later impacted. From the Santa Monica Mountains, to the Pacific Palisades ridge line, and the Angeles National Forest, these materials now hold the memory of both absence and renewal.
BROTO: Portuguese for "bud" or "sprout," a stem that puts down roots; symbolizes growth, regeneration, and the power of transformation, honoring nature’s ability to rebuild and thrive.
Júlia believes the earth holds its own sense of memory, an ever present record of transformation. Her handmade pigments undergo a process she calls blooming, where they shift and settle as they dry into distinct patterns. Much like the landscapes they come from, constantly evolving yet carrying the past within them.
In BROTO, her natural pigments echo the land’s resilience, capturing the cycles of change and regrowth that shape both nature and our own lives.

SPRITES MINI COLLECTION
Inspired by the phenomenon of sprites, red or reddish orange flashes of light that dance above thunderstorms, this work evokes the awe and mystery of these rare electrical discharges.
Sprites occur when nitrogen molecules become excited and emit light from cumulonimbus clouds, a phenomenon first documented in 1989 by scientists at the University of Minnesota. Júlia’s fascination with sprites began in her childhood, as she often gazed out of her bedroom window in southern Minnesota, mesmerized by the storms that passed through the landscape.
Symbolically, sprites only appear during powerful thunderstorms, serving as a reminder of resilience in the face of life's challenges. Just as these fleeting flashes of light illuminate the dark, turbulent skies, her paintings invite viewers to reflect on their own ability to find beauty and strength amid difficulty. This collection is a celebration of the dynamic interplay of color and light that exists between the earth and the sky, encouraging a sense of hope and perseverance.
IN BLOOM
A flower blooming is a powerful symbol of growth, transformation, and the unfolding of potential. Emerging from bud to full bloom, it reflects the beauty and vulnerability of becoming. This body of work marks Júlia’s first collection created entirely from locally gathered natural pigments. By collecting earth, stones, insects, and plants from her landscape, she documents her personal journey through the language of color, exploring themes of transformation, resilience, and the courage to embrace new beginnings.
Her natural paintings undergo a process she refers to as blooming, where the pigments settle into their final form and unique patterns, evoking the memory of the earth. She believes that the earth holds its own sense of memory, and this is reflected in the way her handmade paints shift and transform as they dry. This blooming process symbolizes the organic movement and subtle changes inherent in the natural materials she works with.
Through IN BLOOM, Júlia Godoy unearths her own past experiences and memories with a collection of ethereal, raw paintings that evoke resilience in the face of life's inevitable changes with bold simplicity. With subtle tonal shifts, she suggests an internal journey and the rising warmth of courage emerging from the darker depths of fear.
